2. Hypothetical assumptions for the past and present
1) ~ㅆ으면 = If subject ~ (past)
(~ is the conjugated stem of the verb or adjective)
- The bottom consonant ㅆ indicates past tense, which is combined with the conjugated stem.
- The expression ㅆ으면 denotes past tense
1) 그들이 없었으면 학교 생활이 재미없었을 것 같아요. (학교 생활 school life)
- ㅆ을 것 같아요 I think that ~ (past)
2) 그녀가 한국에 있었으면 그녀를 만났을 거예요.
3) 너무 배고파서 음식이 있었으면 먹었을 거예요.
3) …ㄴ/는다면 let’s say…, If (assumption)
1) 다른 나라에 간다면 어느 나라에 가고 싶어요? (다른 나라 another country)

3. Wish (Hope) for the present and past
1) …(으)면 좋겠어요 = I wish … (present)
(...is the infinitive stem of verb or adjective)
· If the infinitive stem of the verb or adjective ends with a vowel, 면 좋겠어요 is added after the stem.
Ex) 그들이 행복하면 좋겠어요. I wish they were happy.
· If the infinitive stem of the verb or adjective ends with a consonant, 으면 좋겠어요 is added after the stem.
Ex) 먹을 수 있으면 좋겠어요 I wish I can eat
Exercise 8) Translate the sentences into English and vice versa.
1) 눈이 그만 오면 좋겠어요. (그만 sto)
2) 뭐를 하면 좋겠어요?

5. Regret
…ㄹ걸 (그랬어요) = I wish I could/would…,I should have… (regret)
(…is the stem of the infinitive verb or adjective)
ex) 미리 공부할걸.
I wish I would study in advance.
I should have studied in advance.
Exercise 14) Translate the sentences into English and vice versa.
1) I should have met the person.
2) I should have studied hard. (열심히 hard)
3) 건강할 때 운동을 규칙적으로 할걸. (건강하다 to be healthy, 규칙적으로 regularly)
4) 있을 때 잘 할 걸 그랬어요. (잘 하다 to do well)
