Korean Weekly Expressions (Week 19) 

 

 

…는 것이 어때요? How about …ing?, what do you think about…?

* …는 게 어때요? Is the shortened form of …는 것이 어때요?

 

영화를 보는 게 어때요? How about watching a movie?

 

공원에서 만나는 게 어때요? How about meeting at the park?

 

취미활동을 하는 게 어때요? What do you think about doing a hobby?

 

저녁을 같이 먹는 게 어때요? How about eating dinner together?

 

길거리를 구경하는 게 어때요? How about sightseeing on the street?

 

 

…는 것이 의미가 없어요 there is no point of…ing, …ing is meaningless

* …는 게 의미가 없어요 Is the shortened form of …는 것이 의미가 없어요

 

대화하지 않으면 한국어를 배우는 게 의미가 없어요.

If you don’t have conversations, learning Korean is meaningless.

 

건강을 해치면서까지 돈을 버는 게 의미가 없어요.

Earning money at the cost of one’s health is meaningless.

 

목표 없이 바쁘게 지내는 게 의미가 없어요. Being busy without a goal is meaningless.

 

열정이 없으니까 일하는 게 의미가 없어요.

There is no point of working since I don’t have passion.

 

 

…는 것에 비하면 compared to …ing

Similar expression) …는 것에 비해 compared to …ing

 

그는 먹는 것에 비해 살이 안 쪄요. Compare to what he eats, he doesn’t gain weight.               

 

그녀는 보이는 것에 비해 꽤 부자예요. Compared to how she looks, she’s quite rich.

 

 

…는 도중에 during the time when… something unexpected thing happened

집에 가는 도중에 비가 왔어요. It rained while I was on my way home.

 

회의를 하는 도중에 정전이 됐어요. The power went out while we were having a meeting.

한국에 있는 동안에 남자 친구와 결혼할 거예요.

I will marry my boyfriend during my time in Korea

 

대학교에 다니는 동안에 친구를 많이 사귀고 싶어요.

I want to make a lot of friends while I’m in college

 

줄을 서서 기다리는 동안에 그 사람을 봤어요. I saw that person while waiting in line.

 

저희가 서로 이야기를 하는 동안에 모르는 사람이 제 옆에 앉았어요. 

A stranger sat next to me while we talked to each other.

 

 

…는 대신에 A: A  instead of …ing, A rather than …ing

 

물을 마시는 대신에 커피를 마실래요. I will drink coffee instead of drinking water.

 

청소하는 대신에 숙제를 할게요. I will do the homework instead of cleaning.

 

 

…는 데 도움이 되다 to be helpful with/for…

 

한국어를 배우면 더 좋은 직업을 가지는 데 도움이 될 것 같아요.

시간이 들어요 it takes time, 힘이 들어요 it takes energy

성공하는 데 시간과 노력이 들어요. It takes time and effort to succeed.

 

아이를 양육하는 데 돈이 들어요. Raising children costs money.

 

 

…는 데 문제가 있어요 have a problem …ing

         

새로운 언어를 배우는 데 문제가 있어요. I have trouble learning a new language.

 

이 기사를 이해하는 데 문제가 있어요. I have a problem to understand this article.

 

새로운 친구를 사귀는 데 문제가 있어요. I have a problem making new friends.

자전거를 수리하는 데 시간이 걸려요. It takes time to fix a bike.
