Reported speech is used when you report what another person says, asks, or requests without directly uttering it.
I. Report a declarative statement
“someone said to A/told A that” “A에게 …다고 (말)했어요”
I-1. “…다고 (말)했어요” “said/told that …(present)”
- The infinitive stem of an adjective ‘…’ was happening at the time when the subject said it
- 다고 (말)했어요 follows after the infinitive stem of an adjective regardless of its consonant or vowel ending.
Ex)
1) DS: 그는 저에게 말했어요. + “넌 착해.”
RS: 그는 제가 착하다고 말했어요.
He said that I am nice.
2) DS: 저는 어머니께 말했어요. + “저녁이 맛있어요.”
RS: 저는 어머니께 저녁이 맛있다고 말했어요.
I told my mother that dinner is delicious.
3) DS: 그는 그녀에게 맗했어요. + “당신은 아름다워요.”
RS: 그는 그녀에게 아름답다고 말했어요.
He told her that she is beautiful.
4) DS: 그는 저에게 말했어요. + “넌 예뻐.”
RS: 그는 저에게 제가 예쁘다고 했어요.
He told me that I am pretty.

- The conjugated stem of a verb or adjective ‘~’ had already happened at the moment when the subject said it

Reported speech (RS): 그는 저에게 운동했다고 말했어요.
He told me that he had exercised.

I-3. “…ㄴ/는다고 (말)했어요” “said/told that …(present)”
- The infinitive stem of a verb ‘…’ was happening at the time when the subject said it
- If the infinitive stem ends with a vowel, ㄴis added under the infinitive stem and 다고 (말)했어요 follows.
- If the infinitive stem ends with a consonant, 는다고 (말)했어요 follows after the infinitive verb stem.
Ex)
- DS: 그는 말했어요. + “나는 너를 좋아해.”
RS: 그는 저를 좋아한다고 말했어요.
He told me that he likes me.
2) DS: 그는 그녀에게 말했어요. + “나는 너를 사랑해.”

3) DS: 그들은 그녀에게 말했어요. + “결혼을 축하해!”

- … is the infinitive stem of a verb or adjective that will happen later than the moment when the subjects said it
- “…겠다고 (말)했어요” expresses determination of a subject whereas “…ㄹ 거라고 (말)했어요” represents simple future

RS: 저는 친구에게 이사를 도와주겠다고 했어요.
I told my friend that I will help out his/her moving.

- If the infinitive stem ends with a consonant 으라고 (말)했어요; otherwise, 라고 (말)했어요
