…냐고 물어봤어요 asked if … (reported speech)

* It is used to convey someone’s direct question

 

저는 그 아이에게 몇 살이냐고 물어봤어요. I asked the child how old he/she is.

 

그는 저에게 지금 몇 시냐고 물어봤어요. He asked me what time it is now.

 

저는 그에게 왜 친구 모임에 안 왔냐고 물어봤어요.

I asked him why he didn’t come to the friends’ gathering.

 

그녀는 저에게 한국어를 말할 수 있냐고 물어봤어요.

She asked me if I could speak Korean.

 

그녀에게 여기에 올 수 있냐고 물어봐 주세요. Please ask her if she can come here.

 

 

…냐에 따라 달라요 It depends on …

 

어디에 있냐에 따라 달라요. It depends on where you are.

 

뭐를 하냐에 따라 달라요. It depends on what you do.

 

누구와 가냐에 따라 달라요. It depends on who you are going with.

 

 

너머 beyond

 

무지개 너머에 뭐가 있을까요? I wonder what is beyond the rainbow.

 

지평선 너머로 해가 떠올랐어요. The sun rose beyond the horizon.

 

 

너무 very

Synonyms) 아주, 엄청, 매우 

 

너무 매운 떡볶이를 먹었어요. I ate very spicy 떡볶이.

 

아주 매운 음식을 먹었더니 배가 아파요. I have a stomach-ache since I ate very spicy food.

 

오늘 날씨가 엄청 더워서 아이스크림을 먹고 싶어 졌어요. 

I crave for ice-cream because the weather is very hot today.

 

 

(A에) 놀라다 to be surprised (at A)

 

교통 카드로 어디에서나 환승할 수 있다는 사실에 놀랐어요. 

I was surprised that you can transfer anywhere using a transportation card.

 

대한민국에서는 공공장소에서도 인터넷을 사용할 수 있어서 놀랐어요.

I was surprised that you can use the internet even in public places in South Korea.

 

 

누구나 everyone, anyone (in a positive statement)

Synonym) 아무나 anyone, whoever

 

열쇠를 찾는 사람은 누구나 승자가 될 수 있어요.

Anyone who finds the key can be a winner.

 

누구나 이 곳에 입장할 수 있습니다. Everyone can enter this place.

 

누구나 실수를 해요. Everyone makes a mistake.

 

노력하면 누구나 성공할 수 있어요. If you work hard, anyone can succeed.

 

 

누구도 no one, not a single person (in a negative statement)

Synonym) 아무도 no one, nobody

 

그 비밀은 누구도 알 수 없어요. No one can know the secret.

이 문제를 누구도 풀지 못했어요. Not a single person can solve this problem.

 

 

누구에게도 to anyone (in a negative statement)

 

제 비밀을 누구에게도 말하지 마세요. Please don’t tell my secret to anyone.

 

그 사실을 누구에게도 알리지 않았어요. I didn’t disclose that fact to anyone.

 

 

누군가 someone, somebody

 

여기 주변에 아무도 없는 줄 알았는데 누군가 있는 것 같아요. 거기 누구 있어요?

I thought there was no one, but I think there is someone around here. Is anyone there?

 

누군가 그 쪽으로 뛰어가는 걸 봤어요. I saw someone running in that direction.

 

 

누명을 쓰다 to be framed, to be falsely accused

 

그는 억울하게 누명을 쓰고 감옥에 있어요. He’s in prison after being falsely accused.

 

그 사람은 다른 사람의 누명을 쓰게 됐어요.

He was framed for a crime someone else committed.
